SureSource Capture allows clinical researchers to improve data quality and availability during a clinical trial process. Capture features powerful data validation checking that reduces data errors and cuts costs. Every interaction, including writing, is done with a stylus to keep the experience consistent with using actual paper.
Capture interface
Supporting query, validation, and change management inside Capture was the most requested feature at Clinical Ink. Before, nurses had to leave their tablet and view queries inside the portal on a desktop computer and then fix those queries on the tablet by correcting the data inside forms.
We started the project by observing survey data and outlining the questions we wanted to ask our users. Next, we spent a few days observing and interviewing nurses and monitors at clinical trial sites in Wilmington, NC.
Whiteboard brainstorming session
After the interviews, we gained a deeper understanding of their pain points and began brainstorming possible solutions. SureSource Capture already has a special mode called "Ink Mode" that users could switch on and off to write on the form. We decided to use that same interaction pattern and create a utility bar that would highlight all the queries, validations, and changes inside the form.
Early sketches
In the first design iteration of the utility bar, I added the three new sections along with Ink Mode down by the navigation of the form. The early responses were positive, but we were receiving feedback that nurses were tapping on the utility bar on accident while trying to navigate the form.
First design iteration
In the second design iteration, I moved the utility bar to the top of the form. The second round of feedback told us that this was a positive change. Nurses also commented that it was easier to see issues when they were more prominent at the top of the form.
Second design iteration
Second iteration of query, validation, and change management flow
This new enhancement dramatically increased the rate of queries, validations, and changes being addressed and closed, speeding up the entire clinical trial process.
The old check in/check out form experience was a major pain point in Capture. When a nurse would check out a form a modal would pop up and the nurse would have to wait for it to finish downloading before they could check out another chart. When you're checking out multiple charts this could become very time-consuming and disruptive. We decided to move the form downloading process out of the way and into a tray at the bottom of the application. Now when a nurse checks out a form the tray slides up indicating what forms are downloading and they are still able to move around the application.
Old downloading modal that blocked the view of other charts
Updated tray design gives users the ability to move around the product while charts are downloading
